A few years ago I was a true urbanite, living in London, director in a foodie PR business, and enjoying city living with my ever patient husband and beautiful toddler girl.
Three then became four when our cheeky little boy was born and I embarked on one of the most challenging jobs I’ve ever had – being a mum of two. Oh, and then we moving out of London to Oxfordshire!
Whilst I love London (no, I REALLY do), it was time to leave. It wasn’t just about having more space for our family or more family support (thanks Mum!) but about having a family environment that suited everyone’s needs without jumping on a tube to get it.

So we moved further up the river to Oxfordshire.
There I was – a new house, a garden that needed a proper lawnmower, a toddler and a seven week old baby and not a friend in sight.
Skip forward 36 months and here I am now, a mummy living in the Shires with Mademoiselle (8yrs) and Luke (5years) – sometimes collectively know on this blog as the Little Shires.
Relocating has taught me a lot about myself, my resolve and the way we as a family enjoy living. As hubby DadTired puts it, we have City Downsized and Lifestyle Upsized *cringe at his marketing speak. Sorry*
Like the new girl entering a new school half way through the term, I’ve had to deal with the challenges of starting again in a new town. But I’ve learnt many things including
1. you don’t always need to go to London to get a Big City fix (thank you world wide web!!)
2. that the world won’t end if our closest store doesn’t stock falafels (that was a shock when we first arrived. Yes, seriously)
3. that compromise can be a good thing (sometimes!)
Thing 1 and Thing 2 practising how to compromise
I’m learning to love my new surroundings as it’s explored with my Mademoiselle and my Little Mister. Being just 35 train minutes away from Marylebone, London, means we are able to dip into the best bits of the Big Smoke whilst giving my children the outdoor, green space to be, well, just kids!
So this is my space to capture the emotional ins and outs of starting again, to record the memories of our new family life, to share the love of the new places we’ve discovered in and around Oxfordshire and London (via Marylebone) and my love of food.
Thanks for dropping by.
I'm Tracey, nice to meet you. Mummyshire was 'born' three years ago after we moved from London to the Oxford countryside. Here I chart our journey adjusting to our new lives, the challenges of being in the countryside & surviving parenthood.
